Feathers and Ice and Everything Nice: Demystifying BDSM
Bondage and discipline, Domination and submission, Sadism and Masochism (BDSM), is the erotic practice of negotiating, manipulating, and forming relationships based on consent and the balance of power. Previously seen as a “perverse” form of sex-play, BDSM has become an increasingly prevalent topic in the media and in personal sex lives. Recent research illustrates the need to learn to communicate skillfully to BDSM practitioners in the community. This includes learning the terminology, understanding the frameworks and practices, and recognizing the spectrum of relationships in the BDSM community. These considerations in clinical practice, as well as the emphasis in this community on open communication, safety, and sex-positive rhetoric is an ideal instrument for education and clinical support for safe sex practices.
Feathers and Ice and Everything Nice: Pharmacological Considerations in BDSM Practice

Pharmacological considerations are explored in Bondage and discipline, Domination and submission, Sadism and Masochism, with a focus on medication advisories for all practices.
Pioneer: Preventing STIs in Women with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Pioneer is a team-oriented approach to unplanned pregnancy prevention in exceptional women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This program is the first of its kind in the southeastern United States. Pioneer hopes to build a unique interdisciplinary team consisting of researchers, clinicians, personal care aides, community-based organizations, and clientele to refine and evaluate Pioneer within a clinical environment. This program will provide, assess, and evaluate sexual and reproductive health (SRH) training for clinical staff in the treatment and care of women with IDD, from the ages of 13-25. Pioneer represents opportunities to address a crucial, yet elusive clinical question in the sexual and reproductive care of women within this exceptional population: Can STI transmission in women with IDD be prevented through interdisciplinary team intervention?
Project TEASE: It’s all about sex.
Women with disabilities have significantly diminished knowledge in areas of sexuality, such as sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy, and contraception. This can be attributed, in part, to the lack of appropriately tailored sex education for girls and women with disabilities, but also to increased rates of victimization, isolation due to lack of mobility, and lessened access to sexual services. Current sex education curriculum uses a predominately heteronormative, orgasmacentric view of sexuality, which does not fit an atypical body in an exceptional population. The World Health Organization recently advocated the creation of a disability component to be added to sexual health policies in programs to decrease the likelihood for poor health, comorbid conditions, premature death, and the spread of communicable diseases. Project TEASE is a website designed to empower and enable women with disabilities to create a transparent, evolved, authentic, self-expressive sexual identity.

and care of these products, and discussion on basic use of BDSM paraphernalia.
Active Consent: What the #MeToo Movement can Learn from BDSM
Bondage and discipline, Domination and submission, Sadism and Masochism (BDSM) has become an increasingly prevalent topic in the media and in personal sex lives. Although this erotic practice of negotiating, manipulating, and forming relationships is based on active consent and the balance of power, a statistically higher number of BDSM “scenes” follow a power dynamic that women are actively fighting in the workplace and at home with the viral #MeToo Movement. The BDSM community, however, has put major efforts into prioritizing active consent and managing role responsibility for many years. Since sexual consent is a current topic from criminal courts to college campuses, a better understanding of BDSM is necessary when speaking with our clients, patients, and partners. This includes learning the terminology, understanding the frameworks and practices, and recognizing the spectrum of relationships in the BDSM community.
Come As You Are: Inclusion and BDSM Practice
BDSM 102: An in-depth look at the structural dynamics in BDSM practice, how they relate to those in the black female S&M community (with special emphasis on Identity), and discussion on building a creative space for exploring BDSM safely within the community. This is an advanced session which discusses rape play, age play, and race play.
Removing the Gag: Successful Communication with Clients in the BDSM Community
Bondage and discipline, Domination and submission, Sadism and Masochism (BDSM), is the erotic practice of negotiating, manipulating, and forming relationships based on consent and the balance of power. Previously seen as a “perverse” form of sex-play, BDSM has become an increasingly prevalent topic in the media and in personal sex lives. Due to the stigma attached to this community, providers demonstrate an inability to care for and teach clients/patients on safety practices for this community. This session combines a brief overview of the previous BDSM 101 session with examples of societal stigmas from those outside of the community and qualitative feedback from these participants after education on BDSM, as well as their self-reported reduced stigmas.
From Coitus to the Courtroom: Differentiating Criminal Sexual Sadism from BDSM-related Sadomasochism
Bondage and discipline, Domination and submission, Sadism and Masochism (BDSM) has always been an incendiary topic in the media, personal sex lives, and especially in the courtroom. Although this erotic practice of negotiating, manipulating, and forming relationships is based on active consent and the balance of power, a statistically higher number of BDSM “scenes” are introduced as evidence against a defendant due to the highly stigmatized perception. The BDSM community, however, has put major efforts into prioritizing active consent and managing role responsibility for many years. Because sexual consent is a current topic from criminal courts to college campuses, a better understanding of BDSM is necessary, especially in the adversarial system of criminal justice. This includes learning the terminology, understanding the frameworks and practices, and recognizing the spectrum of relationships in the BDSM community. This presentation includes graphic/disturbing images of sexual sadism and unsafe BDSM practices.
